jamie oliver has started a new program - jamie's ministry of food - where he wants people to give up the fast food lifestyle and learn to cook basic meals. then those people them pass on the recipes to friends who pass on the recipes and so on and so forth until thousands of people are cooking.

he's been criticised after his first episode for portraying a typical english village as thick and slovenly (this is the same village where mothers were pushing macdonald's into their children's outstretched hands through the school gates when chips and burgers were banned from school dinners in favour of healthy eating - thanks to jamie). this article from the times was a very amusing read. i like how they censored 'wanker' in the opening paragraph.

seriously, what season is it?

this is my back garden. the snow shows not sign of stopping. i was wearing cropped trousers, flip flops and a t-shirt 2 days ago and i was all hot and sweaty from walking around in the sun. yesterday was 10 degrees.


the saying goes...april showers bring may flowers....not, april snow showers kill may flowers. luckily i remembered to take in my potted plants that i put outside for some spring sunshine yesterday.


this is not right, i should not have woken up to this. as i can tell there was little to no warning for this snow shower either. i watched the news before going to bed and the weather prediction for today was sunny intervals with the possibility of sleety showers. there was no call for big, fat, thick snowflakes falling from large, dense, white clouds.

the tales of beedle the bard

amazon uk has just purchased (for nearly 2 million pounds) one of the seven, un-published, hand written, hand illustrated copies of 'the tales of beedle the bard' - translated from the original runes - by j.k. rowling. this is the book dumbledore bequeathed to hermione; it contains 'the tale of the three brothers' which is the only beedle bard tale retold in the deathly hallows. there are 4 other tales and now amazon is trying to figure out how to let the world at large hear them. they've given a review of 'the wizard and the hopping pot' on their website.

i enjoy the photography of the book on display.

i was sad to hear that the urban peasant had died but i was shocked to hear he was 84. i really liked his cooking show and i used one of his cookbooks quite often. when i started getting interested in cooking, he inspired me by the way he cooked nice food from fresh ingredients easily.

it appears england is under attack again

the terror alert for england has been raised to 'critical', the highest level possible. it basically means a terrorist attack is imminent.

it's all a bit bizarre. it all started with a car bomb that was left outside a nightclub near piccadilly circus. thankfully the bomb didn't go off. and then a second car full of petrol and explosives was found not too far away.

but the most intense situation was when a flaming car full of petrol cylinders was driven into glasgow airport. police somehow arrested 2 men from the car but one of them, shouting 'allah' - apparently - who was completely ablaze, tried to attack the police while others were trying to quench the flames with an extinguisher.

is it all a coincidence that tony blair stepped down and gordon brown took up the role of prime minister days ago?

is it a coincidence that it's almost 2 years since the 7/7 bombings?

and in other news...

north england is severely flooded.

tony blair is no longer prime minister, gordon brown is.

all enclosed public places are now totally smoke free.

8 teenagers have been stabbed or shot in london in as many days.

He was killed in a freak accident in Cairns, police sources said. It is understood he was killed by a sting-ray barb that went through his chest.

the first documented polar-grizzly bear was discovered recently in canada. it had...

thick, creamy white fur, typical of polar bears, as well as long claws; humped back; a shallow face; and brown patches around its eyes, nose, back, and one foot, which are all traits of grizzly bears.

unfortunately an american hunter shot and killed it. his mother must be so proud.

Countdown to extinction?

according to the stop the badger cull website,

"On 15th December 2005 the British Government announced a twelve week ‘public consultation period’ to consider whether and how to kill badgers."

but, others think that,

"Many people consider that this consultation is a sham to soften our response to what has already been decided - a mass slaughter of a ‘protected’ native wildlife species."

unfortunately the consultation period is technically over as of this precise hour. i managed to get my letter in just before the deadline. even though none of you will be able to, it's good to be informed nonetheless.
